The David Erlanson Art Gallery is located in the center of
the Richland Community College campus and is used to display artwork
of students, faculty, and professional artists. Each month a new artist
is featured and the public is invited to a reception honoring the artist.
The gallery opened
with its first show in the fall of 2000. Since then, many visiting exhibitors
and patrons have commented on what an attractive and impressive exhibition
space it is. The space's remarkable transformation from a humble smoker's
lounge into an art gallery was made possible through a capital renewal
grant from the State of Illinois.
As an educational
tool, the gallery provides an opportunity for students, staff and community
members to see the work of some of the state's leading professional
artists. Since its inception it has been the goal of the gallery to
feature work that is challenging, thoughtful and conceptually stimulating.
It is hoped that it will serve as an arena where a dialogue may occur
between the artwork and viewers. An effort has also been made to expose
patrons to a variety of media. In its brief history, the gallery's shows
have included nearly every traditional medium as well as installation
and multimedia work.
Annual student and
faculty shows are also featured, and the gallery space has served as
a stage for other arts events such as readings and dramatic performances.
The David Erlanson Gallery offers an important laboratory experience
for students studying the visual arts and is an important asset to Richland
Community College's Associate in Fine Arts program.
