We also talked about ways to create multiple exposures and various forms of darkroom experimentation. In addition we watched the music video Isobel by Bjork, which was directed by Michel Gondry. You can watch the video on YouTube here. Take note of the layering of film, which is very similar to methods for creating double exposure in photography. Finish up portraits and self portraits for Wednesday. Also, critique Open Mouth by Keith Carter. Art 126-01 gave presentations for the entire class period. Be ready to look at motion contact sheets on Wednesday. Wednesday, April 23, 2008 Today we gave most of the presentations. I will be posting everyone's powerpoints on the student pages soon. After that everyone took time to finish up shooting portraits and self portraits which will be due next Wednesday. Art 126-01 is continuing work on portraits, juxtapositions and personal work. Monday, April 21, 2008 Sorry guys! My computer is finally up and running again, so I'll be able to update daily again. Yay! Art 125-01 was not able to give presentations, so those will begin on Wednesday. Instead, we spent the day working on portraits and self portraits. Those will be due April 30th at the beginning of class. Art 125-02 was able to begin presentations, but will continue those on Wednesday. Art 126-01 watched the first episode of the Genius of Photography series, then had a work day. Presentations on the contemporary artists research essay were assigned, and are due on Monday the 28th. Keep working on finishing up loose ends. We haven't seen several 35mm holgas, juxtapositions, and portraits. You guys need to catch up soon! _____________________________________________________________ Monday, April 7, 2008 In the morning, we visited Shooting Stars Studio. We had a great time seeing a working studio and playing with all of the props and equipment. Thanks Chris! The afternoon class went on a street shoot around downtown Decatur. We walked around alleys and watched the construction. Overall, it was fun. Hugh's class had a work day! For Wednesday: We will be having a work day to finish photographs for the student art exhibit. Remember to keep working on finalizing your street shoots and get shooting your portraits and self portraits. _____________________________________________________________ Wednesday, April 2, 2008 Today we continued our discussion on lighting. I brought in several examples of artificial lighting including hot shoe flashes, light spheres, hot lights, and speedotron strobes. We took several test shots to compare the differences in light quality and direction. Monday we will meet and then go to Shooting Stars Studio at 2950 N Water St. (next door to Jimmy Johns, across from the old Kay's Merchandise). Bring your cameras! We'll be back in time for dual credit students to catch their buses. Contact sheets for street portraits and urban landscapes due Monday. Start working on your portraits and self portraits. _____________________________________________________________ Monday, March 31, 2008 Welcome back from break! Today we discussed lighting. We will further this topic on Wednesday with discussion on electronic light sources and demonstration. Bring your cameras for in class participation and portrait instruction. Please remember the following: * Written essay rough drafts are due Wednesday before class * Keep working on Street Shoots * Get work ready for the student exhibition April 9-11th * Come to the Lincoln Theatre this Friday from 5-8pm for a reception * Consider preparing artwork for the May 2nd Lincoln Theatre Exhibit _____________________________________________________________ Wednesday, March 19, 2008 Today was a work day, since it was too rainy to go out on the street shoots. We will reschedule after break. Students worked on research for their essay projects and in the darkroom. Have a great Spring Break! I'll see you guys Monday the 31st. _____________________________________________________________ Monday, March 17, 2008 Happy St. Patrick's Day! Today, we looked at photograms (2 are due for Wednesday). We also talked about the street shoot. You can find the assignment sheet here. We then watched a film on Annie Liebovitz's career as a celebrity photographer for Rolling Stone and Vanity Fair. Plans for Wednesday: Weather permitting we will meet at the photo lab then head down town. We will meet at the library parking lot (as it has free parking). I will also collect your photograms at the beginning of class. In Art 126, Hugh discussed the next assignment: Juxtaposition. He also looked at progress on the 35mm Holga work and personal portfolio. Plans for Wednesday: Discuss strobe lighting and studio photography. Watch Born into Brothels. Hand back artist's statements and look at prints from assignments. _____________________________________________________________ Wednesday, March 12, 2008 Today, we discussed the Diane Arbus photograph. Written responses can be read here. There was quite a bit of discussion on what makes photography art. Other than that, we also talked about medium format photography and different film choices. After that, we made photograms and discussed the midterm portfolios. Each student met with me individually to discuss their progress thus far, and what was expected for the remainder of the semester. Plans for Monday: Lecture on street shoots and portraits. Look at photograms. In Art 126, Hugh discussed using twin-lens cameras, and printing 35mm Holga negatives. After that, we met with the students and talked about their portfolios. Plans for Monday: Look at 35mm Holga prints and contact sheets for personal work. _____________________________________________________________ Monday, March 10, 2008 In Art 125 today, we finished the movie Avedon, that we started last Wednesday. After that we discussed the new assignments: Master Study Research Project, photograms, negative swaps, and a critique of Diane Arbus' Child with Toy Hand Grenade in Central Park, New York City. Details can be found in the assignments and written responses sections. In addition, we did a cross-class critique, where each student was given one print from the other class to critique. The students wrote down their suggestions on a piece of paper that will be included with the portfolios when they are returned on Wednesday. I also demonstrated how to hot press mount your FB prints. Your book also has detailed instructions with nice photos to illustrate the process. Plans for Wednesday: Return midterms and meet with students individually. Discuss the Arbus photograph. Create photograms during class time and start the negative swap process.
